Avison Young in Oakland

Avison Young opened its Oakland office in August 2014 to expand the company’s market presence in California’s Bay Area.

Area Overview

Situated at the geographical center of the San Francisco Bay Area, Oakland is the largest and most established of the East Bay cities and is the 8th largest city in California.  Located in Alameda County, Oakland encompasses 56 square miles of land, with 19 miles of coastline to the west.  Oakland’s central site at the crossroads of major freeways and transit systems means the city is closer to more of the region’s workforce than most other cities in the Bay Area.

Oakland is also an international gateway, with more than $33 billion of goods passing through the Port of Oakland each year.  Located on the mainland shore of San Francisco Bay, one of the great natural harbors of the world, Oakland was among the first ports globally to specialize in the intermodal container operations which have revolutionized international trade.  Oakland's cargo volume makes it the fifth busiest container port in the United States.

The city is also home to several major corporations including Kaiser Permanente and Clorox, as well as the corporate headquarters for national brands such as retailer Cost Plus World Markets.  Emerging companies such as Pandora Radio and Sungevity are also headquartered in Oakland.

The overall Oakland metro office market includes the cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, Alameda, San Leandro, Richmond, Hayward and all of Oakland, which includes the downtown Central Business District, Jack London Square and the Oakland Airport area.  The office market has more than 27 million square feet (msf) of speculative office space with an additional 10 msf of owner-user properties.

Given the immense logistics operation of the Port of Oakland and the proximity of Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area and to Northern California, the industrial market consists of over 192 million square feet of manufacturing, warehouse and distribution facilities.  The Oakland industrial real estate market spreads throughout the I-80 and I-880 freeway corridors and includes the cities of Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward, Union City, Newark and Fremont.
