Silicon Valley tech companies seek AI talent despite layoffs

While overall job postings in the Silicon Valley have declined, AI roles have grown in prevalence. Between 2020 and 2022, AI-related positions represented approximately 11–12% of all white-collar job postings in Silicon Valley. This share has increased to roughly 26% YTD. Given the presence of multiple AI startups with immediate requirements for office space, this trend is expected to continue in the near term.
Amid rising demand for AI talent, employers such as OpenAI and xAI are actively seeking additional space to accommodate their growing workforces. OpenAI is pursuing 500,000 square feet in Mountain View while continuing to recruit engineers, and xAI recently signed a 105,000-square-foot lease near its current headquarters to house its engineering team.
This trend contrasts with the broader market. While large technology firms in the Bay Area have conducted over 27,000 layoffs YTD, technology companies across the United States have eliminated nearly 110,000 positions over the same period. AI is expected to help offset these layoffs, as major tech companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure through extensive financing deals nationwide.
